One Big Week: Student Crisis Fund
By University of Maryland
The Student Crisis Fund supports the financial wellness and personal well-being of our students so they can thrive personally and academically.
The Student Crisis Fund supports the financial wellness and personal well-being of our students so they can thrive personally and academically. University of Maryland <strong>One Big Week gifts to the Student Crisis Fund </strong>are the best option to quickly respond to students in need of financial assistance. Since 2020, the UMD Student Crisis Fund has distributed more than $2.4 million to more than 4,200 students and, even now, the need for emergency student assistance continues.
The Student Crisis Fund provides financial support when a verified crisis has negatively impacted a student's health, safety, well-being, and their ability to continue their education. As a new academic year begins, we want to ensure that we can continue to provide this vital resource to our community.
A gift of any amount to the Student Crisis Fund will make a direct difference in the lives of Maryland students. This support makes a world of difference for Terps who need it, allowing them to focus on their education at Maryland. The more financial support we have, the more students we can help!

One Big Week: Mighty Sound of Maryland Scholarship Fund
By University of Maryland
Help us grow the first endowed fund to support scholarships for marching band students of all majors! Your gift could be matched.
Help us grow the first endowed fund to support scholarships for marching band students of all majors! Your gift could be matched. University of Maryland <strong><em>**An anonymous Trumpet alum has agreed to provide a $10,000 matching gift once we have raised $10,000 for the MSOM Endowed Scholarship.**</em></strong>
Being part of the Big Ten is all about our collective SPIRIT for our alma mater. The Mighty Sound of Maryland (MSOM) helps bring that Terp Spirit to life each year. Now, you can help support their efforts with a gift to the Marching Band Student Support Endowment.
In Fall 2022, Dotty Reitwiesner '78 helped to launch a first-of-its-kind endowed fund to support scholarships for marching band students from all majors. It's her hope that all members of the MSOM Community — alumni, parents/family, fans, and students — will see this as a shared endowment. <strong>A gift of any size will help us to </strong><strong>strengthen the Marching Band Student Support Endowment, so that generations of MSOM students of all majors will benefit from scholarship support year after year.</strong>
<strong>Dotty Reitwiesner '78</strong>
Here are statements from the inaugural MSOM scholarship recipients this Fall 2023:
<ul><li>"Receiving aid means so much to me. It helps me pay for school costs without sacrificing doing things that I love, especially MSOM and music in general. Now I can worry less and focus on doing what I love." </li><li>"Following unexpected financial hardships faced by my family this year, being awarded funding is a big part of what allows me to remain a member of the best band in the land without having to worry too much about the heavy cost of education. Not having to commit to an external source of income through something like a part time job during the semester means I have more time to focus on both MSOM and my classes."</li><li>"Being a recipient means I can continue to focus on my studies, aspirations in music and marching band without having to worry about my financial situation and I am forever grateful.</li><li>“The generosity of donors for this program provides me the opportunity to participate in the marching band and pep band at the University of Maryland, which have been highlights in my college career. Thanks again, and Go Terps!”</li><li>"Attending UMD was a big financial decision for me and my family, but the friends I've developed and experiences I've gained through MSOM have made it so worth it. This financial assistance will help to take off some of that burden and allow me to be more present and fully enjoy my time at school. Marching band has been my passion for several years, and it's been the most amazing feeling to grow so much as both a musician and a person surrounded by people who care so much about me."</li></ul>
<em>Thank you for your generosity, and for supporting future generations of MSOM students!</em>

One Big Week: Terp to Terp Campus ReUse Store Fund
By University of Maryland
Support students’ essential needs and foster a culture of social responsibility and waste reduction.
Support students’ essential needs and foster a culture of social responsibility and waste reduction. University of Maryland For many Terps, financial insecurity is a huge barrier to their health and wellbeing.
Resources like the Student Crisis Fund help to alleviate some of that pressure with direct financial support to students, but the <strong>Terp to Terp Campus ReUse Store aims to provide material goods to students while also supporting campus sustainability waste diversion goals</strong>.
According to research, the average college student produces 640 pounds of waste per year they are enrolled in university, including furniture, decor, and temporarily used items, while an average of 230 tons of waste is produced during the move-out period each semester.
Since May 2021, the Campus ReUse store has accepted donations of new and gently used items (small appliances, kitchen/cooking items, room accessories, clothing and more) and redistributed them to Terps in need. Every item is available free of charge to UMD students, and additional items are donated to local nonprofits. Funds supporting the Terp to Terp Campus ReUse Store will assist with operating expenses and day-to-day management of the store.
This initiative helps to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.
As of August 2023
<em>18,502 </em><em>pounds diverted from landfill</em>
<em>8,226 </em><em>pounds distributed</em>
