Fostering Terp Success

While 70% of foster kids want to pursue higher education, only 20% are able to attend. Of that 20%, only a small 3% are actually able to graduate. Without a famiy or support system, it is hard for these students to stay in school and complete their degree. We are a group of UMD students trying to raise $2,000 in just one month to help Fostering Terp Success to try to increase this statistic from 3% to 100%. Fostering Terp Success is a program through Student Affairs that provides assistance to students who have gone through the foster care system or are homeless.

We chose this program because it is not well known on campus, but is doing great work to help students who do not have the same support system they need to succeed in college that many other students do. Read on to learn more about the project and how you can help!

Fostering Terp Success provides assistance to UMD students who have experienced foster care, are homeless or at risk of being homeless, or who are without a system of support.

The Fostering Terp Success Program Fund supports the purchase of necessities that most students take for granted. Funds are used to purchase hygiene items (soap, toothpaste, shampoo, etc.), school supplies, public transportation, grocery cards, and graduation regalia (caps & gowns). In addition, this fund supports Terp Success Program Initiatives such as student mentoring, faculty/staff training sessions, and other outreach aimed at supporting students in need.
