Some veteran reporters wait years to cover a national political convention. Next summer, about a dozen Merrill College students will have the rare opportunity to cover either the Democratic National Convention in Milwaukee or the Republican National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. Merrill is one of the few journalism schools in the country whose students get credentials to attend the conventions, so this is truly a unique learning experience.
The cost to send students to cover both conventions is about $25,000, which includes transportation, housing, meals and convention costs such as press work space, electricity and internet.
Our goal for Giving Tuesday is to raise $10,000 of that $25,000, and to get things started, Rob Doherty '79 has offered to match the first $1,000 of donations!
"Covering the Democratic National Convention in 2012 was a life-changing experience for me. Simply put, I would not be where I am at in my career without the opportunity to step outside my comfort zone and test myself on such a high stage against some of the best journalists in the world. I could not be more grateful for CNS and the Merrill College for such an unforgettable moment in my time at Maryland."

"Traveling to the Democratic National Convention as a student was one of the best experiences of my undergraduate career. It gave me unparalleled hands-on experience, incredible access to top political journalists and some amazing friendships that I still cherish today."
