Public Health Without Borders (PHWB) is a student-run organization at the University of Maryland that aims to improve health outcomes through sustainable health education initiatives. PHWB is committed to promoting public health activities globally, including on and around the University of Maryland campus. Since 2014, PHWB has conducted international health projects in Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, Peru, and India. These projects have focused on first aid, nutrition, prevention of infectious diseases, oral hygiene, hand washing, and oral rehydration therapy for diarrheal diseases. PHWB has also helped the local community by partnering with Prince George’s County schools and College Park wellness programs. Each workshop places an emphasis on educating the partner community on how to improve their health using the resources available in their region and culture.
PHWB focuses on creating lasting relationships with the partnering communities through adopting sustainable interventions and culturally competent practices. In doing so, PHWB enables students of all backgrounds to interact with one another under the broader context of public health. In addition, PHWB membership includes more than 150 undergraduate students from across majors and colleges, graduate students, and faculty. This diverse collaboration provides individuals of different ages and academic levels the opportunity to interact with one another outside of the classroom setting. PHWB exemplifies the University’s commitment to service as well as its commitment to providing living and learning opportunities to students.

A $25 donation will cover the cost of materials that we use during our handwashing demonstrations. Proper handwashing is one of the most effective ways to prevent disease transmission. To educate children and communities about proper handwashing, we use visual tools like Glo Germ, which glows under a black light and simulates remaining germs on hands after washing.
A $50 donation will help offset costs associated with in-country travel for students. Some of the locations we travel to are remote. Ferry rides, drivers, and fuel for transportation are a few of the in-country travel expenses we have.
Your donation of $100 will be used to help offset the costs of our health education interventions. This would include the design, creation, and printing of health promotion material for workshops to remain in country. Travel teams purchase supplies to leave with community leaders in order to facilitate sustainable intervention programs.
Your donation of $500 would help support the development of various programs within each project team. This would include the training of a community health worker in Sierra Leone, the development plans of a library in Peru, and the facilitation of background checks and fingerprinting for students in our area.
Your donation of $1,000 will be used to cover airfare for a University of Maryland undergraduate student who would be unable to travel without this financial assistance.
