A Cut Above: Equine Program Pasture Mower Fund

The University of Maryland's Equine Studies Program is dedicated to training students and horse farm operators on how to properly manage grazing horses to improve horse health and reduce environmental impact.  To help us achieve our mission, we maintain an equine rotational grazing demonstration site for educational purposes as well as conduct research in equine grazing and behavior.  We've trained over 100 students on how to care for grazing horses as well as how to properly maintain horse pastures as part of our workforce readiness training.  In addition, our pasture management educational events have served to educate ~ 750 people in environmentally-friendly horse pasture best management practices.

We have a critical need to acquire a commercial-grade zero-turn grass mower that we can use to follow national best management practices for productive horse pastures. Mowing a grazed pasture to the appropriate length at the right time can help to control weeds and ensure a more even and healthy regrowth of desirable grasses. Because our students and staff perform the mowing, we require equipment that has the latest safety technology as well as equipment that is easy to operate.

Unfortunately, current program funds do not cover the cost of a mower. We are looking for donations to help us get this important piece of equipment.  Thank you for your support and we hope to see you at one of our equine rotational grazing educational events in 2021!
