Terrapin Rockets

About Us

Terrapin Rockets is a student group at the University of Maryland that designs and builds high performance model rockets. Currently, our team consists of 90 members who represent various majors, backgrounds, and experience levels when it comes to building rockets. This year we're expanding our student group, and we need your help to build new and more advanced rockets!

Our Project

We compete in various competitions each year ranging from target-altitude focused launches to telemetry payload launches. Last year, with only 1 team, we won 1st place in the video payload event at the Battle of the Rockets. This year, with our large body of extremely talented future rocketeers, we are able to send 4 target altitude teams and 3 planetary rover teams to represent the University of Maryland. We're hoping to win 1st place prizes in both events!

This year, we are introducing a couple novel experiences for our members:

All members are going to have the opportunity to obtain high power rocketry licenses through Tripoli Rocketry Association. This requires each member to individually construct, launch, and recover an appropriate rocket for each level of certification.

Additionally, we are beginning an exciting new chapter involving the development of liquid rocket propulsion, a much more powerful engine system that allows for much higher flights. This is a huge leap forward from our current, solid-engine rocket technology! We have a new designated facility to test liquid rocket motors, and hopefully be able to build and test flight-weight liquid rocket engines.

As we continue to pursue more challenging goals for our group, costs also rise. All donations are appreciated, and all donations will go directly towards helping fund exciting rocket related projects for the team. Reaching our goal of $7,500 will greatly help advance the knowledge and opportunities of our members.

Gifts in support of the University of Maryland are accepted and managed by the University of Maryland College Park Foundation, Inc., an affiliated 501(c)(3) organization authorized by the Board of Regents.  Contributions to the University of Maryland are tax deductible as allowed by law.  Please see your tax advisor for details.
