We are Gemstone Team Black Mamas Matter!

Introduction:

Whether it be due to systemic injustices that plague the healthcare system, a lack of physical access or because of poor health literacy that causes challenges in navigating the healthcare system, black women are systemically and statistically disparaged. We want to lead the change in our local community.

About Us:

We are a group of motivated women in the Gemstone Honors college who are working towards improving the maternal health outcomes of Black women in Prince George’s County. Our goal is to conduct interviews with Black women and obstetrician-gynecologists (OB/GYNs) in the area to examine how health literacy, accessibility to culturally competent care, and cultural competency training in medical schools each contribute to maternal health outcomes and disparities. Ultimately, we hope to use input from Black mothers, physicians, and organizations involved in maternal health care to develop a website to improve health literacy and create a policy memo to improve cultural competency curricula in medical schools.

Our Timeline:

Our Plans:

We hope to conduct surveys and interviews with Black mothers in Prince George’s County to understand their maternal care experiences. We also hope to conduct surveys and interviews with health care professionals in the area to learn about their experiences with providing and learning to provide culturally competent care. We will use the funds we raise to distribute printed materials to recruit participants, cover travel expenses as we go out into Prince George’s County to interview participants, and compensate participants for their time. We also hope to develop a website to expand access to health information.
