We are Gemstone Team HEM(O-)!

About Us

We are a group of undergraduate students from the University of Maryland, College Park who are looking to raise money for our research into blood substitutes. We are a diverse team consisting of different majors, tracks, and ideas. We are working in conjunction with the Gemstone Honors Program and our team mentor Dr. Allan Doctor to improve the accessibility of blood and organs to under supplied areas.

Why?

In the United States alone, a patient will require a transfusion of blood or platelets every two seconds. There is a great, unmet need for safe and effective blood substitutes in addition to increasing accessibility. Additionally, synthetic blood cells have the potential to play a role in the ex-vivo organ support by increasing its viability. There are thousands of patients awaiting organ transplants, and the list continues to grow without end.

Research Question

How can the structure of a blood substitute be altered to improve its stability when subjected to a high-shear environment?
