Who are we?
Team TRANSPORT is a multidisciplinary research team in the Gemstone Honors program at UMD. We are a group of 10 undergraduate students with a diverse set of majors looking to improve the treatment of pancreatic cancer for patients.
Pancreatic cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths. Since it is often found in later stages, treatment is expensive, invasive, and often ineffective. Team TRANSPORT is looking to incorporate nanogel technology into chemotherapeutic treatment to improve the efficacy of drug delivery for pancreatic cancer.
Typical chemotherapy programs are expensive, physically and emotionally taxing on patients, and result in a multitude of side effects including hair loss, nausea, vomiting, changes in appetite and fatigue. To combat this, our team is researching a plant-derived chemotherapeutic drug alternative called artemisinin. As it has promising anti-cancer effects, we plan to implement a nanogel-drug combination called NanoART361 to improve treatment and mitigate the toxic side effects of chemotherapeutic treatments.
