Help Writers’ House Build a Self-Publishing Lab!

The Jimenez Porter Writers’ House is a Living-Learning center for undergrads to study creative writing. 50 to 60 of us live together in Queen Anne's Hall, take workshops, and do projects like creating Stylus (UMD's litmag) and Terpoets (student-led, bi-weekly Open Mics).

We want to be able to self-publish our own creative work and group projects right here in the House! Zines, chapbooks, pamphlets and broadsides, flyers, posters with poems on them - - there's no limit to what we could produce. The Self-Publication Lab will be comprised of 2 workstations furnished with the best software available, plus a color copier/scanner/printer that students would be able to use at very low to no cost.

In addition to enabling us to learn new software and design, the lab will create a meeting place for students to exchange ideas and work on group projects.

This project will impact every single Writers' House student, since all of us self-publish as part of our culminating project at Writers' House. The lab removes a significant logistical and financial hurdle for many of us.  Stylus staff (about 30 people) will also use the lab to create UMD's literary journal every year, and Terpoets will use it to create posters and flyers for publicity.  As both Stylus and Terpoets serve the entire campus community, the impact of this lab reaches far beyond Writers' House walls.  There's no doubt that lots of completely independent, off-the-hook creative projects will also be supported by the lab, and once the creative juices get flowing, who knows what new forms and channels of communication might open up! Let's take Writers' House to the next level!
